Why Starting a Podcast is the Next Move with Kelby McIntosh

Why Starting a Podcast is the Next Move

Our conversation with broadcast journalist, podcast host, and founder of a production company, Pencil Media Group, Kelby McIntosh has led to a lot of insights on how one job can lead to the start of a business venture that has a lot of heart and soul with a mission to provide a voice for those that need it most.

The Start of Something New

Kelby McIntosh initially started pursuing an arts degree. But due to complications in scholarships for art majors, things had to make a turn. A friend pointed him in the direction of broadcast journalism and soon after his love for it bloomed.

Now with an extensive career in broadcast journalism; working as a Staff Writer for KETK and Cumulus Media as an Associate Producer, over the pandemic, with a lot of support and coaxing from friends and valuable mentors, Kelby made the decision to start Pencil Media Group.

PNCL (Pencil) Media is a community-focused media outlet with an alternative style that champions radical expression. We define the times with a vanguard of next-generation writers and image-makers through grassroots journalism and broadcasting to advance our mission.

And now PNCL Media has created a variety of content and part of that is the creation of two podcasts, Alone On the Couch and Feeding the Albatross.

From Journalism to Podcasting

The shift in focus from journalism to producing a podcast presented a similar structure for Kelby. He was familiar with the research that is required from both. Writing the editorial vs a script had their structural differences but were manageable.

What was most challenging was the actual production of the podcasts. And while it was an interesting learning curve for Kelby and his team, it proved to be worth it as Feeding the Albatross was presented with an award for being one of the Top Black Podcasts to Listen To.

Kelby is still figuring things out as he goes with the labor-intensive side of creating a podcast that also includes having to understand audio production mixing and

And while it’s been some time since the podcasts have been updated, Kelby promises that they are in the midst of preparing for season 2 with a whole new slew of guests to have wonderful conversations with.

And for Kelby and Pencil Media Group they have found a space in the podcast sphere to showcase their storytelling chops while bringing attention to their company. Even won an award for one!
